The S10's 4WD is kaput. It literally cannot move out of its parking spot. I’ve never seen a vehicle that was so bad in the snow. And that’s with weight in the back. My drive to work was truly nerve wracking. Luckily, I got a ride home.
Stupid truck. I’m over it!
Also: Snow tires are not worth it in Kentucky. It snows here approximately twice a year. All seasons are more than enough. My 6 does fine in the snow. I just drove it to the store and back with no problem. I mainly drove the truck so if someone crashed into me, I wouldn't be devastated.

As a former owner of an 88 s10, I can confirm they were AWFUL in the snow. When the 4wd went out in mine it didn’t matter how many dead hookers were in the bed, it just wouldn’t move. The shitty Coopers I had on the truck I’m sure didn’t help things either.
As for the 4wd, at least in my gen of S10 (not sure how mechanically similar the boxy s10 is to the newer one) there is a solenoid that controls the 4wd that likes to go. Unfortunately IIRC I think it's under the truck somewhere. Can't remember where though. Also could be a vacuum line.

That’s kinda hilariously pathetic. I’m guessing that whatever snow you parked on got compressed into ice and the wheels are just spinning on that. One decent push should have gotten you moving. Also, the truck might need some movement for the 4wd to engage as the gears may not quite line up (if not actually broken that is). Is it a lever shift or electric?

Had an 87 (86 maybe) Reg Cab S-10 with manual steering. It was awful in snow. Had winter tires, was still awful in snow.

I live in central Virginia. My grand Prix did awesome in the snow, I knew my RWD ram is going to suck ass. Not worth $900 for a set of snow tires for a few days a year. So I did what my “Grew up in the Sierra Nevada” training taught me. Get a set of chains.

Get a friend to jump on the rear bumper while you are in drive, helps get traction on the rear wheels

the 4x4 died?! no way! I’ve never seen that on one of these.
That sucks man, the 4x4 and all seasons would’ve gotten you home fine.
And I hope they are all Terrains, not really Seasons on a light pickup

When/If you can, replace the tires with decent all terrains, like Duratracs or Nitto Exo Grapplers. They aren’t as rough as a full on mud tire, are winter rated, and last a decent amount of time, especially on something like a light pickup. Tires make all the difference, even if it’s not full snow tires.

did your 88 use a thermo actuator or an electric actuator? I remember GM had thermal actuators for years and they tended to:
A: not work really great in the cold
B. Just not work.

That sucks.. I drive a 4x4 ranger in Indiana and haven’t had any pproblems. Honestly I barley use the 4x4 because the all seasons work great! Hope it treats you better next time.

I had a 2WD ‘92 S10 4.3L for seven years while living in southwestern Ohio, and loved it. I had Dunlop Radial Rover tires on it at the time. Sure it was tail-happy in snow, but I never got stuck once.

I want to say it’s vacuum actuated. My a/c vents stopped working because my s10 vacuum hoses dry rotted and remember reading it can also cause the 4x4 not to work too. Mines 2wd so I can’t makes sure.

I had an S10 Blazer and that thing was a beast in the snow. Not sure if it had a different 4wd setup, but stock my friends and I would routinely take it through snow drifts higher than the hood.

Good luck man, we are expecting 6-12" here in SLC this weekend fortunately my Colorado z71 is a beast with snow tires on and a locker in the rear.
